A fire door is a type of door or movable barrier used as part of a passive fire protection system within buildings to prevent the spread of fire or smoke between separate sections. It is usually the only means of allowing people to pass through a firewall. According to Life Safety Services’, a leader in the fire inspection industry, “Fire-rated doors are an integral part of not just the building’s passive fire protection system but the building’s overall fire protection. A properly operating fire door, just like a properly operating fire damper, is a key component in the compartmentalization of a building to stop the spread of deadly fire, smoke, and toxic fumes and gases.”

Both the door leaf (the swinging panel of the door) there and the door frame is required to meet the guidelines of the testing agency which provides the product listing. The door frame includes the fire or smoke seals, door hardware, and the structure that holds the fire door assembly in place. Together, these components form an assembly, typically called a “doorset” which holds a numerical rating, quantified in hours of resistance to a test fire. All of the components of the fire door assembly must bear a listing agencies label (with the exception of ball bearing hinges which meet the basic build requirements of ANSI 156.2 and NFPA 80) to ensure the components have been tested to meet the fire rating requirements.

Fire Door – Regulations

All components are required to adhere to product certification requirements that are acceptable to the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) by meeting the requirements of the local building code and fire code. The regulatory requirement will change from country to country.

For example in the United Kingdom a fire resisting doorset should be sujected to either a British Standard Fire Test BS 476 Part 22 1987, or a BS/EN 1634-1 2000 test. The results are recorded by the test agency and provided in a report which detail such things as constructional details, distortion data and pressure readings. The numerical fire resistance rating that is required to be installed in a particular building is provided in the Building Regulations approved Document B, or British Standards such as the BS 5588 series (e.g., 30 minutes FD30, or FD30(S) if cold smoke resistance is also required).

Similar technical guidance documents and building regulations are in effect in other countries.

Fire Door – Combustibility

Fire doors are not necessarily noncombustible. It is acceptable for portions of the door to be destroyed by combustion during exposure to a fire as long as the door assembly meets the fire test criteria of limiting temperature limits on the non-fire side of the assembly. This is in accordance with the overall performance goal of a fire rated door to slow fire propagation from one fire rated compartment to another for only a limited amount of time, during which automatic or manual fire fighting may be employed to limit fire spread, or occupants can exit the building.

The most basic type of electronic lock is a magnetic lock (commonly called a mag lock). A large electro-magnet is mounted on the door frame and a corresponding armature is mounted on the door. When the magnet is powered and the door is closed, the armature is held fast to the magnet. Mag locks are simple to install and are very attack resistant. One drawback is that improperly installed or maintained mag locks can fall on people. and also that one must unlock the mag lock to both enter and leave. This has caused fire marshals to impose strict codes on the use of mag locks and the access control practice in general.

Additionally, NFPA 101, Standard for Life Safety and Security, as well as the ADA (Americans with Disability Act) require “no prior knowledge” and “one simple movement” to allow “free egress”. This means that a person must be able to walk up to a door and with one motion (no push buttons, or having another person unlock the door, or read a sign “special knowledge”) and exit. Other problems include a lag time in releasing as the collapsing magnetic field is not instantaneous. This lag time can cause a user to walk into the door. Finally, mag locks by design fail unlocked, that is if power is removed they unlock. This could be a problem where security is a prime concern. Additionally, power outages could affect mag locks installed on fire listed doors, which are required to remain latched at all times. Thus, a mag lock would not meet current fire codes as the primary means of securing a fire listed door to a frame[1]. Because of this, many commercial doors (this typically does not apply to private residences) are moving over to stand alone locks, or electric locks installed under a Certified Personnel Program.

Electric strikes (also called electric latch release) replace a standard strike mounted on the door frame and receive the latch and latch bolt. Electric strikes can be simple to install when they are designed for drop-in replacement of a standard strike, although some electric strikes require that the door frame be heavily modified. Installation of a strike into a Fire Listed Door (for open backed strikes on pairs of doors) or Frame must be done under listing agency authority if any modifications to the frame are required (mostly for commercial doors and frames). Since there is no current Certified Personnel Program to allow field installation of electric strikes into fire listed door openings, listing agency field evaluations would most likely require the door and frame to be de-listed and replaced. Electric strikes allow mechanical free egress: As a user leaves, he operates the lockset in the door, not the electric strike in the door frame. Electric strikes can also be either fail unlocked (except in Fire Listed Doors, as they must remain latched when power is not present), as a mag lock, or the more secure fail locked. Electric strikes are easier to attack than a mag lock. It is simple to lever the door open at the strike, as often there is an increased gap between the strike and the door latch. Latch guards are often used to cover this gap.

Electric mortise and cylindrical locks are drop in replacements for the door mounted mechanical locks. A hole must be drilled in the door for electric power wires. Also a power transfer hinge[2] is used to get the power from the door frame to the door. Electric mortise and cylindrical locks allow mechanical free egress. Electric mortise and cylindrical locks can be either fail unlocked or fail locked. Even though electric mortise and cylindrical locks are the least expensive and most often used solution for access control, modification of fire listed doors (most commercial doors are at least rated for 20 minutes) can only have a wire chase hole drilled through them with listing agency oversight[3] or under a Certified Personnel Program, such as the Intertek sactioned Perfect Raceway Program[4]. If a Certified person is not used to install the wire chase, a listing agency field evaluation must be completed, sometimes at considerable cost. Homeowners who install these locks are typically not subject to such constraints.

Electrified exit hardware, sometimes called panic hardware or crash bars, are used in fire exit applications. One pushes against the bar to open it, making it the easiest of mechanically free exit methods. Electrified exit hardware can be either fail unlocked or fail locked. A drawback of electrified exit hardware is their complexity which requires skill to install and maintenance to assure proper function. Only hardware labeled “Fire Exit Hardware” can be installed on fire listed doors and frames and must meet both Panic Exit listing Standards and Fire listing Standards.

Motor operated locks are used throughout Europe. A European motor operated lock has two modes, day mode where only the latch is electrically operated, and night mode where the more secure deadbolt is electrically operated.

Most automatic gates driveway gate operators used for integrated security systems access control are of the slide variety. They work on an electric motor either AC or DC which turn through an oil cooled reduction gearbox giving power to the drive cog which drives the gate on a steel rack.

The power of the automactic gate motors is determined by the RPM and reduction ratio of the gear box.

Swing motors work on the same RPM and gear ratio idea, but most work on a ring gear formula as opposed to a oil reduction box.

The gear turns onto a drive shaft which then pulls an arm attached to the gate via a universal joint.

The piston system is also popular with swing gates, but are slower. These work on a worm gear.

Safety gates are most often used to protect babies and small children from hazardous situations, such as chairs, fireplaces and kitchens. They can also be used to prevent a baby from entering unwanted rooms, to separate him from the family pet, and to keep him from getting under foot during tedious chores. Safety gates are separated into two basic types: hardware-mounted and pressure-mounted. Within these categories are various types of gates.

Hardware-mounted gates, also known as permanent gates, are installed using screws. In order to provide adequate protection, they must be screwed into door frames or the studs located behind walls. Permanent gates are recommended for protecting babies from the dangers of stairs. These gates are made from metal, wood, or enamel-coated steel and can expand up to 43 inches (1.09 meters) without an extension and 66 inches (1.68 meters) with one.

Besides keeping babies off the stairs, there are others styles of hardware-mounted gates. Hearth gates are used as a deterrent to separates small children from the dangers of the fireplace. Configure gates can extend up to 288 inches (7.3 meters) to accommodate odd sized openings. Railing protectors are transparent shields used to prevent children from sticking their heads through stair railings.

Pressure-mounted safety gates are held in a doorway, or other opening, by applying pressure against the frame or walls. They are made of two sliding panes that adjust to accommodate most openings. These gates are made of wood, aluminum, enamel-coated steel, plastic, wire or nylon mesh with rubber-coated end tubes to prevent damage to the walls. Pressure-mounted safety gates are small enough to be portable and don’t leave any scars on your walls. There are very few styles of pressure-mounted gates, due to the fact that they require two strong frames to provide the necessary pressure to hold them up.

A majority of the time, standard pressure-mounted gates are used keep children or pets out of rooms for a short period of time. Because they operate on pressure alone, they can’t be used to block access to stairways. Walk through pressure gates operate like a hardware-mounted gate, in that the external frame is pressure-mounted to the wall, while the inside of the frame can be opened with a latch. Most styles of pressure-mounted gates can accommodate opening of 28 (71.12 cm) to 60 inches (1.52 meters). Extensions are available to accommodate larger sized openings.

Why do you need to install an Electric Fence System? How is it different from the ordinary fence or gates that we have? What are its major advantages and benefits? Here’s an outline of the reasons why you should consider to install an electric fence system.

1) Electric Fence System – Safe and Effective

The shock of electric fence security system is painful so it deters animals as well as people from trespassing. A low impedance electric shock is not cruel or inhumane and does not cause physical injury. This system only requires relatively low capital outlay and can monitor long distances. It also has low maintenance costs because it reduces the need for security manpower and has an extended operating life.

2) Electric Fence System – Economical and Cost-effective

Electric fence security system is more economical than concrete fencing. Considering that the shock of the fence is the greater deterrent and not the brute strength, the need for elaborate bracing is unnecessary. Reduced repair and maintenance also adds to the economical value. Over long periods, electric fence requires far less consumption of time and money to maintain compared to most rigid products.

3) Electric Fence System – User-Friendly

Operating the Electric fence security system is simple and it does not compromise security. Fence monitoring and alarm signals should be easy to understand as well as directing responding agencies to the alarm location.

4) Electric Fence System – Advanced technology

The electric security fences can be integrated with other security systems such as cctvs, Access Controls and Intrusion Alarms. The system is capable of remote control monitoring and as well as have other direct communication options such as radios, landlines and cellular phones.

Why do you need to install automatic doors? I get a lot of this question from my clients so I decided to make an article about it and share it to everyone. I have outlined 7 good reasons why you should install an automatic door.

1) Automatic Doors – More Options

When you choose automatic doors, you don’t have to sacrifice form for function. With so many different colors, finishes and designs to select from, it’s easy to find an automatic door that enhances any business’s unique style.

There are three basic types of automatic doors-swinging, sliding and folding doors.

Automatic swinging doors have a range of configurations, including a single door that swings in or out and is left-handed or right-handed, and a pair of doors that simultaneously swing in the same direction. The door operator is concealed or surface- applied. The doors are center-pivoted, offset hung, balanced or hinged. Automatic swinging doors also feature sensors or control mats and safety signage.

Automatic folding doors are consisted of two or more separate panels; one panel swings, and the other panel slides in a guide. Automatic folding doors may include a single folding door that folds in or out and is left-handed or right-handed; or a pair of doors simultaneously folding in or out, either left-handed or right-handed.

Automatic sliding doors have flat panels that slide horizontally and linearly, with a variety of configurations. Their other features are similar to the ones described for swinging automatic doors, and they also include sensors or control mats as well as safety signage.

2) Automatic Doors – Convenience

An automatic door entrance does away with the aggravation and struggle associated with opening a heavy, manual door and instantly demonstrates to users the establishment they are entering cares about their convenience.

Automatic door designers also stated what they liked best about automatic doors is their convenience and ease of use. Some explained that a key advantage of automatic doors is they can be opened without the use of hands, which can sometimes be filled with packages, children and luggage.

Automatic doors allow businesses to welcome everyone entering, regardless of their physical capabilities, with an accommodating, open door. Disabled people are effective in guaranteeing that they are properly served. This means they should be able to enter any building with little effort, in spite of their physical disability. Elderly people, whether suffering from a handicap or not, often fall into a category of people who are unable to easily open manual doors independently.

3) Automatic Doors – Image

Automatic doors can help to position a company as a leader. First impressions are often significant and lasting. When a customer, or any other user, enters a building through an automatic door, they are instantly made aware that the business is high-tech.

The most inconvenient and impractical aspect of manual doors is that they are generally much too difficult and heavy to push open easily. This is problematic for both able-bodied and physically disabled users alike and could potentially lead them into having a negative impression of the business. Moreover, if automatic doors are not installed, it leads consumers to assume that the business is not in touch with their needs and desires.

4) Automatic Doors – Easy to Own, Use and Maintain

Automatic doors are fabricated according to the highest standards for quality and safety, ensuring minimal maintenance requirements and making them incredibly easy to own, use and maintain.

One of the most imperative steps in purchasing an automatic door is determining the type and design that is best suited for the particular location where it will be installed.

This process is greatly simplified with the assistance of qualified professionals who have an understanding of the location’s traffic flow conditions, types of users expected and the facility’s image concerns. Manufactures’ representatives work with buyers and

specification writers to help them select an automatic door that satisfactorily fulfills their wishes and requirements. Additionally, an abundance of information is often available on the manufacturer’s Web site or by contacting them directly and requesting literature.

Today’s technologically sophisticated automatic doors are user-friendly and virtually self-sufficient. When an automatic door is installed and maintained properly, day-to-day operation is straightforward and typically trouble-free.

5) Automatic Doors – Energy Efficient

Automatic doors effectively reduce wasted energy in multiple ways and may significantly lessen annual heating and cooling expenses.

Automatic doors open only when an incoming user or object triggers them to do so and then close again a safe time after the person or object passes through the door. This eliminates the incidence of doors being left open accidentally, which can be a costly mistake when heating or air conditioning is operating. Utilizing an automatic door also ensures that the door is shut completely each time it closes, thereby preventing expensive heat and air conditioning from escaping through open areas. Plus, many new, low-energy door options use minimal power to operate and establish a tight, secure seal to conserve energy.

6) Automatic Doors – Cost / Value

Automatic doors are much more economical than many people believe. Furthermore, a lot of potential buyers neglect to include important factors such as product life cycle, energy savings and lower-cost automatic door options in their pre-purchase door evaluations. This often leads to a common misconception that automatic doors are excessively high-priced.

There are many low-energy automatic door options available, including low-energy swinging doors. These doors offer a cost effective solution to providing universal accessibility–while allowing able bodied traffic to use the door as a manual, swinging door. Creating additional cost savings, low-energy operators can be applied to existing doors.

Automatic doors that are correctly maintained and serviced usually run smoothly for many years and virtually pay for themselves in terms of convenience and energy savings.

7) Automatic Doors – Safety

When properly installed, inspected annually by automatic door certified inspectors and safety-checked daily by premise owners, automatic doors consistently provide safe, convenient access for everyone.

Certified Inspectors and technicians are thoroughly trained and qualified to conduct annual inspections in accordance with current industry standards. Annual inspections are important to make sure the door system is compliant with the latest industry standards. In addition to annual inspections, automatic door certified inspectors and technicians also provide maintenance and repair services.

An intrusion alarm system with an automatic exit control and a misset indicator which informs that someone has trespassed by opening a door during the resident’s absence. This system comprises a sequential circuit which is enabled by mode selection by the resident at his going out and which stores the door’s opening and closing signal produced as an output signal of a door open/closed detection circuit upon a second door opening, a misset alarm device which generates an alarm if the opening of the door is not detected within a predetermined time after the “Absent” mode is placed, and a timer circuit which is operated by the output signal of the sequential circuit and at the time-up to generate alarms. The sequential circuit can be cleared or disabled when the resident comes home and generation of an alarm is then prevented.
